AVID - Advancement Via Individual Determination: For years, AAUW Fallbrook has been working closely with the AVID Program at our local high school by mentoring a select group of students. Each mentor's goal is to be an adult friend that can help her student deal with various challenges in regard to transitioning from high school to a college or university. Quite often, the student is the first person in her family to attend college. On occasion, the student does not have support from her family due to cultural and/or economic reasons. As mentors to AVID students, AAUW members can have a tremendous impact on the future of these students. Mentors invite their AVID girls to AAUW functions, to AVID group events, and to individual get-togethers.

AVID Students and mentors enjoy a stimulating visit to the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla

Guity Balow and Cinda Burke were the coordinators for this activity.  Christine Assad brought home-made sandwiches and fruit; Diane Reeder provided cold beverages, and Judy Barnett brought chips for our picnic lunch. Our photos were taken by Julia Norberg to remember our aquarium excursion.

December 7 Judy Barnett will hostess our Winter Holiday Party. We will have desserts prepared  in advance by AVID students with their mentors. Mentors will provide a hearty potluck lunch for everyone. We sing holiday songs, and have a gift exchange. Then AVID girls decorate one student as an "angel". This is a grand celebration to close the year 2007.

Our first meeting for 2008 will be a mentor planning meeting Friday, January 18, 10:30am at  my home.

HAPPY  NEW  GREETINGS  from  Barbara Ajello

We had a fabulously successful, fun-packed  Holiday Party, Friday, December 7th.  Nearly all the AVID mentors and students were present! Judy Barnett was our hostess. She provided her spacious home for our party and also accompanied our Christmas songs on her piano. The mentors contributed Italian-themed food and the AVID students brought home-baked desserts, which they had previously baked with their mentors, for everyone!  Karen Estes led the gift exchange, where the students opened presents which had been brought by their mentors.

Eileen Hider  led the decorating of a one of the students as an angel. The students were enthusiastic in their creativity. It was a joy filled game where students decorated the angel girl, with holiday trimmings, including wings and a halo, of course!

Photos, taken by Julie Norberg reflect the enthusiasm and excitement of our party.  Being part of AVID is rewarding and fulfilling  and with such a noble purpose. We are truly privileged to be part of this extraordinary component of AAUW.
